the stars did it
dreamy at the most prosaic of times, i was faced with the prospect of taking my dogs for their nightly 'do business' stroll in our biggish southern african backyard under the autumn sky. the breeze rustled the desertland shrubs while the grass was deep and springy. quiet flushing sounds soothed the night, and the neighbours were being slightly less boorish than usual, playing their r&b at 30 decibels only. i told the digdogs to go-about-it-then, and looked up at the southern hemisphere ceiling. whoa... lots of stars, different stars, galaxy type faint patterns. breeze continuing, the anti burglar movement sensor floodlights went off one by one, while i pivoted slowly on heel. vast vast sky, endless horizon, rooftops, a dark on dark silhouette of a low hill... bring peaceful harmonious type thoughts. like how moments are strung together, linked over time and place. this sky is special, it reminds me of the time by the pool in Nata, which was lovely because it was an echo of Pilani. dark plains seen from a dark road with a slightly lighter sky beyond. africa, i'm back, breathing you.
one of the dogs finished peeing and ran up to me, snapping a floodlight on. i came awake quite disoriented, facing the cellphone aerial outside our boundary wall when i thoguht i was facing the clothesline. back to now, which is a great now - mediating between mum and dad bickering, kneading dogs to doughy pulp. it's a good feeling when envisioned scenarios come true for you. i've seen quite a few recently. my midichlorians must be working finally.
in other brain-of-the-wendigo news, i realised that in africa there's a lot of continent level discourse in common parlance. 'truckafrica', 'fruitafrica', 'carafrica' are actual trading names... is it because africa is the home of dark skin? we don't think pan-asia wise ever no. and Indian subcontinent level thoughts usually vilify the other members of subcontinent. not to say africans don't take nation-level bitchinesses seriously. but somehow, we don't have a phrase like TIA (this is africa; leonardo di caprio in blood diamond; yes i'm still on about that).
